Preventing Cancer

with Healthy Choices

American Indians and Alaska Natives have higher behavioral risk factors associated with cancer compared to other populations. Using tobacco, being overweight, not being physically active, and eating poorly are all contributors.

Cancer prevention starts with making healthy choices1 – whether about food, drink, and exercise – or tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.

Remember, avoiding tobacco use and secondhand exposure is vital to decreasing the risk of cancer.

Nutrition

People who are overweight or obese are at higher risk2 of up to 13 types of cancers.2

Maintaining a healthy weight decreases this risk – and healthy weight starts with proper nutrition.

Consider substituting higher-calorie foods with more fruits and vegetables to stay full longer – and with fewer calories.
